NDLEA Arrests Top Nigerian Politician With Cocaine

A seasoned Nigerian politician, Asekun Kehinde Sakiru, has been described as a London-based suspected drug baron

Sakiru was arrested by the NDLEA while trying to board a flight to London – The politician is yet to react to the allegations against him.

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has arrested a former vice chairman of Lagos Island East Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Asekun Kehinde Sakiru, in possession of cocaine. NDLEA will charge Asekun Kehinde Sakiru to court for alleged drug trafficking.

The drug agency disclosed in a statement via Twitter on Wednesday, May 12, that the politician was arrested at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos.

The spokesperson for the anti-narcotics agency, Femi Babafemi, disclosed that the suspect had been on NDLEA’s wanted list following the recent arrest of some traffickers and drug seizures linked to him.

Babafemi said:

“The long arm of the law however caught up with the wanted baron at about 9.40 pm on Friday 7th May 2021 while trying to board a Virgin Atlantic airline flight to London, the United Kingdom at the Lagos airport.

“At the point of his arrest, Asekun was caught with a kilogramme of cocaine concealed in five pairs of palm slippers packed inside his suitcase.”

NDLEA described Asekun as a London-based suspected drug baron who claims to be an international businessman who deals in automobiles.

The agency stated that the investigation is yet to confirm the source of his acquired wealth.

The spokesperson for NDLEA said:

“In the course of tracking him, the sum of N131million was seized from his account and another N14 million also blocked in the account of one of his traffickers, Azeez Adeniyi Ibrahim, bringing the total sum so far recovered from him to N145 million.”

In another news, candidates who applied for enlistment into the NDLEA have been advised to check the names shortlisted for the final screening for narcotic officers and narcotic assistants cadres

A spokesperson for the NDLEA, Femi Babafemi, made the announcement in a statement via Twitter on Saturday, May 8, in Abuja He said the screening exercise, which was suspended in January due to the COVID-19 pandemic, will now proceed in batches in designated centres.
